1. Chilli Leaves Rivals In The Cold
30 March 2014

Outstanding Kiwi bred Elsu/Make It Hot four year old gelding Chilli Palmer was a brilliant victor of the $30,505 Corio Waste Management Geelong Cup for M0 or better class over 2570 metres at Beckley Park on Saturday.

A small but select field contested the event – the biggest in Geelong each season, with multi millionaire and crowd favourite Smoken Up (gate three) and Chilli Palmer (gate five) appearing to be the main chances and that’s the way the race panned out.

Our Blackbird from the pole was the best to begin, with Lance Justice and Smoken Up ambling to the front shortly after the start, multiple cups winner Arber three back the markers being followed by Magical Telf, Chilli Palmer, Smudge Bromac and Savesomtimetodream all in indian file behind him.

Magical Telf was taken away from the markers by Alex Ashwood within a lap to race in the open, with Chris Alford immediately following to possie Chilli Palmer one/one and Smudge Bromac also following to be three back in the moving line.

In quarters of 30.5 and 30.9 for the first half of the last mile, Smoken Up was expected to break the clock for the last half after such an easy time as Lance Justice started to up the tempo.

Easing three wide approaching the final bend, Chilli Palmer sprinted like a gazelle in the straight to overtake Smoken Up and register a 3.8 metre untouched margin over Smoken Up who wouldn’t shirk the issue being the champion that he is, with Our Blackbird holding his ground to finish .7 metres away in third place.

In a last half of 56 seconds (28.5 & 27.5), Chilli Palmer returned a mile rate of 1-59.7 for the journey which was nothing special when you take in the quality of the field.

Trained at Lara by Dean Braun who continues to provide winner after winner with ex-Kiwi talent, Chilli Palmer has recorded 10 wins from only 14 race appearances and without doubt is one of harness racing’s future stars.

Im Corzin Terror takes out the Maryborough Cup

The Amanda Grieve trained seven-year-old pacer, a son of Western Terror/Corzanello, out-stayed his rivals in the 2690-metre $25,505 feature today, the Central Goldfields Shire Maryborough Gold Cup, for a 5.9-metre victory.

Im Corzin Terror made light work of his 20-metre backmarker’s draw early, stepping brilliantly before eventually working to the breeze when Hilltop Hustler and Michael Stanley went to the lead as early leader Cut For
An Ace (Geoff Webster) eased for a trail.

Veteran Jaccka Clive made a mid-race move for Josh Aiken to give Alford and Im Corzin Terror cover before Alford made his move late in the race to come away for a strong victory.

Im Corzin Terror rated 2:01.0 (last half 56.2 seconds).

Hilltop Hustler finished second from his 10-metre handicap, while other handicapped runners Jaccka Clive (third) and Uncle Wingnut (fourth) – both off 10 metres – made up the first four placings.
